Colorado Springs is the ‘Olympic City’ with it’s own velodrome, so iconic road cycling is part of the dna. Here’s a few routes to consider.
1. The Pikes Peak Highway – Start in Manitou Springs at 6400ft, end at 14,115 ft. Better yet, skip the suicide bends up Hwy 24 and catch a ride to the gate at the base of Pikes Peak, at 7400 ft. $10 should get you access to the Hwy. This route is a grueling ascent to the summit of Pikes Peak with breathtaking views and hairpin turns, pushing cyclists to their limits while rewarding them with unparalleled vistas of the surrounding landscape. And the descent? Perfect – and totally worth it.
2. The Garden of the Gods Loop For those seeking a more leisurely ride, the Garden of the Gods offers a loop that is as picturesque as it is pleasant – unless doing intervals, of course. The loop around this National Natural Landmark provides a relatively flat and easy ride, allowing cyclists to enjoy the stunning geological formations and the view of Pikes Peak in the background. Skip high traffic days. They’re brutal.
3. The Greenway Trail along Fountain Creek A perfect option for a family ride or a relaxed solo cruise, the Greenway Trail follows Fountain Creek and offers a scenic and serene cycling experience. This trail weaves through parks and open spaces, making it an ideal route for those who wish to immerse themselves in nature without venturing too far from Manitou Springs.
4. USAFA pIf you can worm your way into the US Air Force Academy, there are some great lengthy loops to cycle. It’s been the site of US Nationals, so you’re in good company. And it’s some of the safest cycling around with wide shoulders and limited traffic.
